About
The Nomadic Monument for Gaza is a traveling art installation that commemorates, raises awareness, and encourages conversation. The monument visualizes the number of victims in Gaza and invites reflection. It is a monument to humanity.
Through a fence of felt pillars, visitors may virtually step into Gaza and experience how it feels to be locked in. On the inside of the pillars, the number of victims is displayed, a poignant experience. The soft floor and sound-absorbing felt enhance stillness. On the tapestry, the map of The Hague is displayed: the international city of peace and justice. This way, it shows just how small and vulnerable Gaza is.
Each line, burned by hand onto the pillars, represents a fallen Gaza resident. Every day at noon, a ritual takes place to commemorate the victims. Each new line is then branded into the felt with a soldering iron.
Everyone may contribute. Download the DIY-kit and build the monument yourself - at home, at school, or in your neighborhood. Donate to support the project and make the voices of victims heard. Or simply stop by, look, listen, and keep ask questions. Your presence and words do make a difference.
The Nomadic Monument was developed by an ad hoc collective from the Dutch art and architecture world. It is hosted by the HOPE Foundation, that gives children in conflict zones a voice through art projects.
